Supporting women small business owners

Your innovation project could get tech funding for women from the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) or the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grant funding programs. Here’s what you need to know.

What they are

Grant funding programs designed to support small businesses in the United States by providing seed money for innovative research and development projects.

How they do it

By awarding $200+ million in research and development (R&D) funding to about 400 startups each year, in three phases, through 11 federal bodies. Grantify helps you apply for funding from one such body, the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Why they’re good

One of the goals of these related programs is to promote diversity in science and technology. They have a strong track record of supporting businesses owned by women and minorities, providing federal grants for women entrepreneurs.

How SBIR, STTR and NSF work

The SBIR and STTR programs are delivered through different federal agencies, each with different criteria and application requirements.

Grantify simplifies the process by helping small businesses like yours apply for tech funding for women entrepreneurs through the National Science Foundation (NSF), which has a $200m budget for this grant and will fund approximately 400 projects this year.

Your project will start at Phase I, which offers awards of up to $275,000. You won’t need to provide match funding or give up any equity.

How to apply for the SBIR and STTR funding phases

There are three distinct, separately funded phases in the SBIR and STTR  programs. You’ll need to apply for each separately:

• Phase I tackles everything from the idea stage to a proof of concept or very early prototype
• Phase II focuses on additional pre-commercial development
• Phase IIB is a supplemental ‘bridge’ award to help you accelerate commercialization

You’ll begin at Phase I with a Project Pitch – a 1500-word summary of your project that outlines:

1. The technical credibility of your idea
2. The feasibility of commercialization
3. The strengths of your project team

You will need to successfully complete a Project Pitch before starting your full Phase I application.
